MoMo Lau

Resident Musician (Ruan, Sanxian)

Lau is currently the resident ruan musician of Hong Kong Gaudeamus Dunhuang Ensemble. She graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, with a major in sanxian under Zhao Taisheng, a renowned sanxian performer. She also minored in zhongruan and pipa under Professor Lui Kwan on and Zhang Ying respectively. She had received coaching for pipa from Lam Siu Kin during her secondary school, and went to Beijing during her study at HKAPA to pursue advanced studies of pipa and sanxian under Professor Yang Jing, a famous pipa performer, and associate professor Zhao Cheng Wei, a renowned sanxian performer. She was also advised by teacher Wei Ruyu and Jiang Shuilin in zhongruan and pipa.

Lau is currently one of the principal members of Yue Pipa Ensemble, and has also performed in the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Macao, Shanghai, Wuhan, Xian and Changzhou with various orchestras.

In 2010, Lau was invited by SENSE ART as a guest soloist for pipa and sanxian at the Setouchi Triennale in Japan, which was a contemporary art festival held every three years. In 2012 and 2014, Lau cooperated with Hacken Lee, a famous Hong Kong singer, acted as a guest soloist of sanxian in Hacken Lee Live World Tour Concert. In 2013, she acted as a guest sanxian soloist in the form of multi-media performance in the program called “To PLUCK with Love” – From Micro-movie to Chinese Music held by Yao Yueh Chinese Music Association. In 2017, Lau was the sanxian soloist in the concert series “Serendipity of Plucked Strings” held by the Hong Kong Plucked String Chinese Orchestra. Apart from rich experience in performance, Lau also got various international awards.

In 2012, Lau received the Silver Prize for Sanxian (Professional) in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai Liuqin Yuan Sanxian Competition. For 2 consecutive years, she was award the Ensemble (Professional) Golden Prize and Solo (Professional) Silver Prize from the Guangdong Chinese Instrument Competition in 2015 and 2016. In 2015, Lau won the Espoir prize in the 16th Osaka International Music Competition In 2018, Lau won the champion and Premio with full marks in AMIGDALA VIII international music competition. During her study at HKAPA, she was rewarded with the society of APA scholarship. She is currently a part-time instructor and part-time performer of the Music Office.
