Jenny Chan

Associate Concert Master (Guzheng, Konghou)

Chan is a professional young musician. She has received her Master of Music Degree with Distinction and Bachelor of Music Degree with First Class Honours from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), majoring in Guzheng under Professor Xu Ling-zi. Chan is currently the associate concert master and musician of Guzheng and Konghou of Hong Kong Gaudeamus Dunhuang Ensemble, as well as the artistic director of A. J. T. Guzheng Ensemble. She started learning Guzheng with Lau Hang and Ng Hiu-hong at her young age. During her study at the HKAPA, she has been mentored by numerous guzheng virtuosi, including Zhou Wang, Wang Zhong-shan, Sun Wen-yan and Teng Chun-jiang. Jenny has also learned Chaozhou music with masters, including Wang Pei-yu, Lin Ying-ping and Lin Ji-heng. She also studies Butterfly Zheng with Ning ling-juan, and Kong Hou with Wu Lin and Luo Lan. On the other hand, Jenny was minored in Guqin under master Teo Kheng-chong, and learned the piano with Cheung Tak-ming.

Jenny receives championships on multiple international competitions, including the Bronze Prize in the young professional category in the 3rd Dunhuang Cup Guzheng Competition, the Best Performer Prize of Guangdong Style Guzheng Music in the Second “Hanya Prize” Guzheng Traditional Music Competition, the Gold Prize in the young professional category in the Fourth International Guzheng Competition, the First Prize in the professional group of the Seventh Fangyin Cup Guzheng Competition, the Second Prize in the professional group of the First Youth Music Cup Guzheng Competition, and the Championship of the Fourth China Youth Festival Guzheng competition.

Jenny has great passion in music and actively participates in performances and music education. Promoting Chinese music and enhancing the development of guzheng art is her lifetime goal. Jenny was one of the radio presenters under the programme “Next Stop is R4” from Hong Kong Radio 4 (RTHK R4), hosting the “Chinese Music Talk” section to promote and raise public interest in Chinese music. In addition, she has been a lecturer and adjunct instructor at the HKAPA Junior Music Program since 2017. She also teaches at several primary and secondary schools. She formed the A. J. T. Guzheng Ensemble, which won the Gold Prizes in ensemble group in the 4th Youth International Guzheng Competition and the 7th International Guzheng Competition.

Indeed, Jenny is keen on doing research about guzheng art. She held a lecture recital in 2018 on the topic of “The Interpretation and Possibility of Traditional Regional Music: The Development of Chaozhou Music in Modern Professional Music Education”, which received great success and positive feedback. She had written several theses, including “Study of the Southbound Zheng Musicians in Hong Kong: Taking Su Zhen-bo, Xiang Si-hua, Xu Neng-qiang and Xu Ling-zi as Examples” and “Taking Chaozhou Zheng as an Example, Discuss the Development of Traditional Music Education”, while the latter was selected by the Chinese Traditional Zheng Music Festival and was published in the “Chaozhou Zheng Scholars’ Essays Journal”.

Jenny has rich experience and high dedication on music performance. She held a public concert in 2019 under the“Our Music Talents” Series of the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department, as well as the two recitals in 2018 and 2016. Her performances were highly praised and appreciated. In 2015, she was selected as one of the Young Music Makers by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and participated in recording and TV shooting by RTHK. She has taken part in the TV program “Cultural Plaza” by Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) several times. She was also one of the Community Cultural Ambassadors under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in 2013 and 2014. Jenny has collaborated with various art institutions, including Hong Kong Professional Guzheng Artistic Ensemble, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong YMCA Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong Youth Ballet Academy (HKYBA), The 13th World Harp Congress and more.
